Welcome to my exercise page. On this page
you will learn how to navigate around the internet using the mouse, browser
and many capabilities. Please don't feel threatened by the internet.
It's big, yes, BUT it's a world of information.
All right, lets begin by exploring the buttons
on top of this web browser (could either be Netscape Navigator or Internet
Explorer). The first thing anyone needs to understand is that the
buttons on both Navigator and Explorer are virtually the same. There
are a few minor differences. I will begin by explaining the buttons
that are the same.
to take you to the Crashdown
Let's try one more example of using your back button. Click on the link below to take to The Great Beyond and look over the main page. Hit your back button to return to this page.
Now wasn't that fun? Now you know how to use the back button. It will come in handy many times you are on the internet. I will also tell you of a shortcut you may wish to try o your own sometime. Say you have been on ten or fifteen pages since you connected to the Internet. You want to go to the third page you got to. Instead of clicking back for ten or so pages, Right mouse click on back. This will give you the choice of all the pages you have been to. Click on the one you wish to return to and vole, you're there without having to go through all those steps. With that, let's move on to the next button in line which is the FORWARD button.
FORWARD: The forward button allows a user to move back and fourth between two pages that he/she wish to view. For example, if a young woman was interested in the effects of smoking and drinking on an unborn baby they could look at two different sites by using the back and forward buttons in conjunction. Let's try and example. all right everyone click below on the link to Our Little Secret.
Now, once you have looked over the main page,
come back to this site by hitting the back button. Now lets say I
want to test you on what is available on the webpage. Go back to
the page by hitting forward and find me who made the web page (hint:
look at the bottom of the page). Then hit the back button and
return here to see if your answer matches the correct answer.
The correct answer is Amber. If you successfully
figured that out, you now know how to use your back and forward buttons
together. You're ready for the next step.
Let's look at the next few buttons which will be out of order (because they are different on Netscape and Microsoft)
RELOAD/REFREASH:
This button lets you reload a page to receive current or updated information.
Not all pages update their information every minute, but it is good to
have these options available for those that do. Lets use this button.
Click on the LINK below to take you to the Weather Channel home page.
Wait for it to load, then hit reload. You will see the page go away
and load again. There won't be any differences this time, but at
least you now know how to Reload/Refreash a page. Try it Now.
CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE WEATHER CHANNEL PAGE
STOP: The stop button allows the user to stop the page that is loading. Say for example it is taking too long to load and you would rather move on to something else, click on the stop button and it will stop the transfer. Let's try this. Click below to take you to the Roswell Pod Squad Page. When you get there, hit the Stop button and see what happens. Then use the back button to return here.
CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE ROSWELL POD SQUAD
The last button that I am going to explain to
you is the print button. The other buttons located on the screen
can either be figured out on your own or I will tell you (if you are in
my class). After this, you'll be ready to move on to Lesson Four
which will be using the internet.
