Each one of the search engines will find you different information. If you are looking for a specific thing I suggest using hot bot. Dogpile takes over 20 different search engines and puts them all together so if you want BIG results use it. The others can be virtually used on anything. Let's try an example.
I have a report due on the Percentage of teens
who become pregnant and terminate their pregnancies through abortion each
year. I need to find that statistic. How am I going to do this.
First I will go to Google. I will then type in what I am looking
for (Teen Pregnancy Statistics). Next I will hit search and the engine
will look all over the internet for information about Teen Pregnancy.
In my case, the first hit contains statistics. As I found out, 50%
of all pregnant teens end up aborting the baby. All right, let's
see how well you can handle searching on your own. You may use the
LINKS from above to go to different Search Engines. There are 5 exercises
below. Three are very easy. The last two will take some time.
Are you ready?
1. Go to www.google.com and type in your name like this ( "yourname" ). Then hit enter. This will tell you how many OTHER people with your name exists. Click on the first Link of the first match. Use you're back button to return to this page to go on to the next exercise.
2. Go to www.yahoo.com and type in Mark McGwire. Write down the first 5 link names. Click on the first match and visit that page. Click the back button to return here.
3. Go to www.infoseek.com and type in "marissa, Illinois". See what information you can find out about Marissa. Is our Town page on one of the links? Visit one of the pages that interests you and then return here for the last two exercises.
4. I have to do a report on the cloning. Specifically I need to know when the possibility of human cloning. Has it been Successfully done? By using a search engine, find me that information (hint: think human cloning).
