Marissa Boy Scout Troop 327
The people of Marissa have been involved in the American Boy
Scout movement almost from the beginning. The Boy Scouts of America
was incorporated on February 8, 1910, and it has been said that one young
boy from Marissa, Harry Hamilton, was registered as a "Lone Scout" in that
same year. He later joined the troop when it was formed, and went
on to become theScoutmaster in later years.
On April 17, 1913, the B.S.A. National Office in New York City,
New York, issued Certificate
#10463 chartering the Marissa Boy Scout Troop and gave it the
designation of Troop #1. The troop retained that number until
1928, when the Belleville Area Council was formed, and the troop was redesignated
Troop 27. When the Okaw Valley Council was formed in 1965, Troop
327 became the new designation that our troop today wears with pride.
Mr. E.E. Paul was the first scoutmaster, and he registered 8
boys as members. He remained the Scoutmaster through 1914 and 1915
and when the troop rechartered in October 1915, Rolland Mathews was added
as an assistant Scoutmaster. Originally the troop was sponsored by
various Sabbath Schools, but in 1933 the Marissa Rotary Club became the
troop sponsor, and continued with the troop for over 60 years. Before
it disbanded in 1996, it was the oldest sponsor in the 9 county area serviced
by the Okaw Valley Council. Since 1997 the troop has been sponsored
by the Marissa Recreational Area, which also provides us with campsites,
and has sponsored two district camporees.
B.S.A. Troop 327 is the oldest troop in the nine county area
serviced by the Okaw Valley Council. Marissa has had a Boy Scout
troop since it's inception in 1913, but somehow the troop lost it's tenure
for the years of 1913 and 1914. The troop just rechartered and completed
it's 82 year of continuous tenure, but as of April 17, 1998, Marissa
and Troop 327 will have completed 84 years in scouting.
